About 

Charmane M. Perry is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Africana Studies and the Associate Director at the Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs at San Diego State University which is located on the land of the Kumeyaay. As an Africologist, Perry is trained in the discipline of Black Studies having received her bachelor's degree in African American Studies from Temple University, a master’s degree in Pan African Studies from Syracuse University, and a doctoral degree in Africology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

 

To date, her research has centered on the Haitian “problem” or question and anti-Haitian sentiment in The Bahamas with a specific focus on Bahamians of Haitian descent and their battles with citizenship, identity, and belonging in The Bahamas. She is also interested in research on Black Philadelphia and Black oral histories which continues to develop her interests in how race and racism play out in different geographical contexts for Black people, from the Caribbean to the United States.
